NEMATA

A participatory project by the DEPUTY MINISTRY OF CULTURE

NEMATA invites you to reflect on your journey: Where were you living in 1974? Where do you live today? Where have you been in the meantime? By pulling threads that record your movements across the island, your personal history will intertwine with the stories of other refugees

The project

In the context of the commemorative events for the black anniversary of 50 years since the Turkish invasion of 1974, the Deputy Ministry of Culture announces the launch of the Participatory Art Project NIMATA.

The whole action will travel to all the provinces in physical form and at the same time on the digital website https://nemata.cyens.org.cy/ with free access and public participation in its formation and completion, from the 16th to the 21st July 2024.

In particular, the public is invited to participate in the formation of a map of Cyprus, where the names of all the villages and towns will be engraved, on which they will mark their personal journey from 1974 until today. The thread will pass through all the points where the participant has settled as a refugee with any changes that may occur in between (change of city, village, etc.) and will end up at his current place of residence. The course of each participant will be combined with the courses of other refugees of our island, while at the same time, in the digital form of the project, the threads will be tied automatically on the map on the screen.

The disaster of 1974 remains the unshakable point of reference for every citizen of our country. That is why all Cypriots are invited to participate in the start of the action in any city and date they wish and if they are refugees to pull their own thread by charting the course of their personal history.
