CYENS Centre of Excellence is a Research and Innovation Centre specializing in Interactive Media, Smart Systems, and Emerging Technologies. CYENS is the only organization in Cyprus focusing on immersive technologies working towards empowering knowledge, and technology transfer in the region.

CYENS is a joint venture of three public universities, the University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology, and the Open University of Cyprus, and two international partners, Max Planck Institute for Informatics, and University College London. CYENS is funded by Horizon 2020 and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and is coordinated by the Municipality of Nicosia.

CYENS research community is strengthened by faculty with recognized expertise in three different pillars, including Visual Science, Human Factors & Design, Communications & Artificial Intelligence.

Visual Sciences

Multimodal data manipulation combining sound, text, speech, and tactile. Including Virtual and Augmented Reality, Computer Vision, Computer graphics, and imaging, as well as dealing with 2D images, 3D images, 3D models, and 3D environments.

Human Factors & Design

Designing environments, tasks, and services based on human abilities, behaviors, and constraints. Investigating the cognitive and psychological aspects of interactive media applications, such as perception, memory, emotions, and contextual limitations of users.

Communications and Artificial Intelligence

Developing interactive systems that incorporate communication, processing, and timely response. Exemplifying a human-centered approach to the development, analysis, and integration of automated processes for smart sensing, intelligent communication protocols, media and content convergence, and principled learning.
