RISE is pleased to announce its 2019 Summer Internship Program for undergraduate- and graduate-level students. Designed to act as an integrator of academic research and industrial innovation, RISE hopes to use its Internship Program to inspire talented young researchers by exposing them to cutting-edge methods and Research in Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies – RISE.
Interns will have the opportunity to carry out research supervised by a mentor and as part of an international team of experts. They will be introduced to the use of the latest methods and techniques in a chosen field or fields, including artificial intelligence, visual sociology, computational cognition and smart systems. In the center of Nicosia, they will become part of RISE’s lively ecosystem of academics, researchers, creative and onward-looking people, innovators, entrepreneurs and practitioners; they will contribute to the development of new ideas, products and services that will promote economic growth in a rapidly evolving region.
The Internship Program is one of the ways RISE hopes to use its “Inspired by Humans; Designed for Humans” approach to instigate a culture of change among the island’s future leaders and pioneers.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Applications for this highly selective program are welcome from young people between the ages of 18 and 30 in any field, but with a keen interest in innovation and the background to undertake university-level research. Applicants may select two projects areas (in order of preference) from the following list of multidisciplinary research groups:
- BIO-SCENT: BIOmetrics for Smart human-Centred EmergiNg Technologies
- EdMedia: Interactive Media and Education/Edutainment
- VR-WELL-BEING: Virtual Reality for well-being, broadly construed
- Museum Lab
- TAG: Understanding the nature and impact of human biases in the algorithms that underlie modern interactive media and smart systems
- SCRAT: Socially-Competent Robotic and Agent Technologies
- CCAPPS: Cognitive and Clinical Applications
- Smart, Ubiquitous, and Participatory Technologies for Healthcare Innovation
- SNS: Smart Networked Systems
- RP-VE: Real-time populated virtual environments
Alternatively, applicants may propose their own project (provided RISE has the supervisory capacity and facilities to accommodate). Applicants accepted into the Program will be assigned one project for the duration of the internship.
HOW DO I APPLY?
By submitting a short statement of interest (no more than 300 words), including two preferred project areas, and supporting documentation (a curriculum vitae, for example) to [email protected]. The application deadline is May 15, 2019; successful applicants will be contacted by May 31, 2019.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DETAILS OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM?
Internship applicants must be available for 4 to 8 weeks between June 1 and September 15, 2019. Interns will be expected to make a presentation of their work and findings before the end of their time with RISE. Both the period of employment and hours are flexible, but interns should expect to work 30 hours per week. Weekly stipend will be €200.
WHAT IS RISE?
RISE is the first Research centre in Cyprus focused on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies. Its aim is to become a centre of excellence that integrates academic research and industrial innovation through knowledge and technology transfer on the island and in the region. It is a joint venture between the three public universities of Cyprus (University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology, Open University of Cyprus), the Municipality of Nicosia, and two renowned international partners, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Germany) and University College London (UK). RISE will fuel scientific, technological, and economic growth in Cyprus and Europe harnessing the power of research to improve the marketplace and solve real-world problems.
