The Complexity of Color Reproduction

Dr. Alessandro Artusi, DeepCamera MRG Leader was invited to give a talk in the International Conference “Mobile digitization “. The conference was organized in the frame of project Mobile Digitizing /MobiDig/, supported by Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The conference took place at Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, on the 10th of July 2019.

Abstract:
The capability of our visual system to convey color information of the environment where we are interacting with, is one of the most amazing and complex mechanisms that a human is experiencing in its daily life. However, to fully reproduce this experience is not an easy task. First, only some aspects of the complete behavior of the human visual system are understood today. Second, the variety of digital color devices available today increases the complexity on how a color need to be mapped for conveying the same visual experience among these devices.
As example, a picture acquired with a digital camera and then visualized on a display device, if not properly manipulated, will convey a completely different visual experience. This aspect is of particular importance when complex color information, i.e., images and video need to be acquired and delivered on a variety of digital color devices.
This talk will introduce the complexity of this existing problem. Starting introducing the general concepts of color science, then the imaging pipeline with its color reproduction mechanisms will be described, over-viewing all the open issues that this implies.
