The Mayor of Nicosia, Constantinos Yiorkadjis, welcomed at the Centre of Excellence in Research and Innovation – CYENS on Thursday 14 April 2022, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus, Mr. Kyriakos Kokkinos, the Minister of State and Digital Governance of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and the Deputy Minister of Interior Mr. Theodoros Livanios, in the context of their presence in Cyprus on the occasion of the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between Greece and the Republic of Cyprus on Digital Policy and Cybersecurity, as well as officials of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus, the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in Cyprus and the Municipality of Nicosia .
During their visit they toured the premises of the Center of Excellence where they were presented with prototypes of applications and systems of the research effort of the center’s research teams concerning cutting-edge technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, the crowdsourcing platform, robotics, the analysis and understanding of three-dimensional buildings. They also had the opportunity to see a demonstration of the capabilities of the motion capture lab and visit the CYENS Thinker Maker Space.
At the same time, the project of the smart city of Nicosia as well as the project iNicosia (three-dimensional Nicosia) was promoted, which is the flagship project of the CYENS Centre of Excellence and has as its main objective, the creation of a digital twin of Nicosia, which is a three-dimensional digital representation of the city, with real-time smart city data.
The digital representation of Nicosia will be ideal for experimentation and modeling so that solutions can be precisely designed and tested and then applied to the real city.
The visit aimed at displaying and highlighting the activities of CYENS as well as the further development of collaborations with research, innovation and entrepreneurship bodies in Greece.
