A system developed to detect wildfires in the forests of Cyprus in real time, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The project is a collaborative effort between the DeepCamera research group at CYENS and the Cyprus Institute.
The Wildfire Detection project employs a state-of-the-art object detection and tracking model (YOLO v7), known for its high accuracy and low latency. This model was trained using UAV footage of controlled fires in rural areas of Cyprus, in coordination with the Cyprus Department of Forests.
Devastating wildfires are, unfortunately, a common phenomenon in Cyprus. Identifying and extinguishing them early is crucial in mitigating their catastrophic effects on the environment, climate, and human and animal life.
