About the position
The HCI MRG (Human-Computer Interaction Multidisciplinary Research Group) is a dynamic and collaborative research group dedicated to advancing the field of human-computer interaction with a strong emphasis on user-centered design, co-design, and design thinking. The HCI MRG employs a multidisciplinary approach to research, drawing from various methodologies and frameworks, to explore innovative ways of creating technology solutions that prioritize the needs, preferences, and experiences of users. By pushing the boundaries of human-computer interaction, the group strives to shape the future of technology design, placing users at the center of the design process and creating meaningful and transformative experiences for individuals in a wide range of domains.
The successful candidates will have the opportunity to conduct fundamental and/or applied research in the area of design thinking. Where applicable, candidates may also participate in the preparation of project reports and deliverables, research proposals for funding, software development, and travel abroad for dissemination activities. Furthermore, successful candidates will be encouraged to publish/present their research results in prestigious international conferences and journals.
Position holders are expected to contribute to the dynamic and collaborative research environment of the HCI MRG (Human-Computer Interaction Multidisciplinary Research Group) and engage in activities that aim to establish the group as an important centre of research in this field including conducting basic research, preparing and submitting research and innovation proposals for funding, engaging stakeholders and pursuing collaboration opportunities, publishing and presenting research work. We welcome applications from talented and motivated individuals with backgrounds in related fields such as Design, Multimedia and Graphic Arts, Architecture.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Panayiotis Zaphiris.
Responsibilities of Research Associate
- Assist in developing the research lab's vision, goals, and strategic plans, aligning them with the broader objectives of the HCI Research Group.
- Conduct extensive literature reviews and contribute to the development of a research framework for the lab, drawing on expertise in co-design, participatory design and user-centred design.
- Provide support in designing research methodologies and protocols, ensuring they are aligned with the lab's research objectives.
- Collaborate with the academic leader in recruiting and selecting research team members, including graduate students and research assistants.
- Facilitate the acquisition of necessary research equipment, software, and infrastructure for the lab.
- Assist in securing research funding and grants by actively participating in proposal writing and budgeting processes.
- Organize and coordinate lab meetings, seminars, and workshops, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.
- Contribute to the lab's knowledge dissemination efforts by presenting research findings at conferences and publishing in academic journals.
- Assist in developing partnerships and collaborations with external stakeholders, including industry partners and other research institutions.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements and trends in the field of human-computer interaction, actively seeking opportunities for the lab's growth and expansion.
- Support the academic leader in administrative tasks, such as preparing reports, managing budgets, and maintaining research documentation.
General Qualifications & Requirements:
- University Degree (Bachelor’s Degree or Degree of a level equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree) or Diploma or Certificate or other study title or qualifications in Design, Multimedia and Graphic Arts, Architecture or relevant field.
- At least 3 years of experience in a relevant field (e.g. Design, Multimedia and Graphic Arts, Architecture, or relevant field)
- Required: Demonstrated experience in conducting research in the field of human-computer interaction, user-centered design, co-design, or related areas. This can include experience with research methodologies, data collection and analysis, and academic writing. Strong knowledge and understanding of human-computer interaction principles, user-centered design, and design thinking concepts. Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
- Desired: Experience in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on research projects. Experience in applying design thinking principles and participatory design methods. Demonstrated experience in coordinating or leading research proposals for funding. This includes experience in conceptualizing research ideas, conducting literature reviews, developing research methodologies, and preparing budgets. Strong grant writing and proposal development skills are desired, along with the ability to effectively communicate research objectives, significance, and expected outcomes to funding agencies or organizations. Experience in coordinating collaborative research efforts, engaging stakeholders, and managing timelines and deliverables is highly valued.
- Computer literate.
- Language requirements: Excellent written and oral English-language skills will be required, especially in reading technical / research articles.

- Ability to interact with stakeholders in application domains and identify opportunities for collaboration.
- Previous relevant industrial / innovation / entrepreneurship experience and interest will be considered an advantage.Previous grant-writing experience will be considered an advantage.
